چکیده

Production of baicalein, baicalin and wogonin by liquid culture of Scutellaria baicalensis cells derived from the plant root was studied. The maximum production obtained were 119 mg/L of baicalein at two week, 1372 mg/L of baicalin at eight week, and 14 mg/L of wogonin at two week. In addition, the production of baicalin was drastically increased to 1000 mg/L level at 3-week culture, and the extremely high production rate (339 mg/L•week) was obtained. In the comparison of total antioxidative activities among baicalein, baicalin and wogonin, evaluated by thiocyanate method, it was suggested that the location of hydroxyl groups both at 5and 6-position contributed to enhancement of radical scavenging activity, and/or methoxylation at 8-position diminished the activity. The possibility of utilizing these flavonoids for natural antioxidants and medicine is also discussed.

Evaluation of variation of acteoside and three major flavonoids in wild and cultivated Scutellaria baicalensis roots by micellar electrokinetic chromatography.

Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) conditions were developed to analyze the constituents of Scutellariae Radix (SR) and Scutellaria baicalensis roots. Using the MEKC method, the major flavonoid constituents of baicalin, baicalein and wogonin of wild and cultivated S. baicalensis roots were compared. In a preliminary comparison of electropherogram, one special peak was found in a wild...

Antiradical and antioxidant activity of flavones from Scutellariae baicalensis radix.

We evaluated the antioxidant properties of four main flavones from Scutellaria baicalensis: baicalein, wogonin and their glucuronides - baicalin and wogonoside. We used three in vitro assays: free radical scavenging with 2,2'-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical, transition metal ions reducing power by phosphomolybdenum assay and inhibition of the hydroxyl radical-induced peroxidation of linoleic aci...

Scutellaria baicalensis Extracts and Flavonoids Protect Rat L6 Cells from Antimycin A-Induced Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Antimycin A (AMA) damages mitochondria by inhibiting mitochondrial electron transport and can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS formation, aging, and reduction of mitochondrial biogenesis contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction. The present study sought to investigate extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis and its flavonoids (baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin), whether they could protect m...

Scutellaria extract decreases the proportion of side population cells in a myeloma cell line by down-regulating the expression of ABCG2 protein.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Scutellaria is one of the most popular traditional Chinese herbal remedies against various human diseases, including cancer. In this study, we examined the active effects of Scutellaria extract and its main flavonoid constituents on the proportion of side population cells within human multiple myeloma cell line RPMI8226 in vitro and explored the potential molecular mechanism...

Effect of Scutellariae radix ingredients on prostaglandin E(2) production and COX-2 expression by LPS-activated macrophage.

We previously reported that Sairei-to concentration-dependently modified lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) production in mouse macrophage-like RAW264.7 cells. Among twelve major ingredients of Sairei-to, Scutellariae radix inhibited the LPS-stimulated PGE(2) production to the greatest extent, followed by Zingiberis rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae radix, Atractylodis lanceae ...
